Lochaber and Ardnamurchan
Hello, Lorna here! If you don't have long to spend in Scotland, I can thoroughly recommend a trip to the beautiful Ardnamuchan Peninsula and the wider Lochaber region.
In Arnamurchan you will experience the whole, joyous,wonderfulness of Scotland in a teeny little peninsula of only 50 square miles. Easy to access from the central belt and with spectacular views and a huge variety of wild life, this little bit of Scottish heaven is unspoilt and undisturbed. If you’re anything like me it will capture your heart and bring you back many, many more times.
When I was a wee girl my Granny (Gillian’s great granny) lived in Fort William, on the shores of Loch Linnie in Lochaber. We spent every holiday with her in her little house only a few miles from the foot of Ben Nevis.
My uncle Hugh (my Mum’s brother) had a wonderful shop in the high street in Fort William called The Highland Homespun,where he sold a huge selection of Scottish knitwear and tartans. It was a treasure trove of Scottish goods with bales of exquisite muted coloured autumnal tweeds and gorgeous skeins of the softest Shetland wool. He also made gents kilt outfits and kilted many a celebrity of the day!
A canny businessman, I’m sure Uncle Hughie would have loved the Gillian Kyle brand would surely have wanted to sell Gillian’s gorgeous Scottish gifts in his beautiful shop.
Although Fort William has changed a lot since those days, it is still is a great place to base yourself and explore the local area. Cross over to Ardnamurchan on the Corry Ferry just outside of Fort William or if you have more time, you can drive round to the peninsula. Either way the scenery is breathtaking and well worth the journey.
