A Brief History of Mother’s Day

This year, Mother’s Day - or Mothering Sunday - takes place on Sunday, March 26th. The day always falls three weeks before Easter Sunday and it’s a tradition that brings round a well needed opportunity to appreciate all that our Mums do for us each year.

'Mother Love' Print at £25.00

Mother’s Day dates way back to 250BC, when the ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria. The festival was dedicated to a mother Goddess named Cybel, and her followers would leave offerings and flowers at the temples.

Following this tradition, for years children having been giving flowers and cards to their Mum and  Mother’s Day sees around one quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year falling on this occasion. Carnations are very popular Mother’s Day flowers and they are recognised as a floral emblem of Motherly love.
